A Belfast school has offered its condolences to the family of a former pupil following her sudden death.

Belfast Royal Academy said it was with "deep regret" it had learned of the passing of former pupil Hilary Ferris.

She was in her early 20s and had suffered a short illness.

"Staff remember Hilary as a vibrant young woman with a genuine zest for life, and we are so saddened by her passing," the school said in a Facebook post.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to her parents Heather and Ivan and to her sister Erin."

Scores of people reacted to the post on social media.

"This is so sad," said one former student at the school.

"I heard about it from one of my friends earlier this week and just couldn't believe it.

"The news has spread very quickly and a lot of people have been left completely struck at this news. She was well liked."

Many of those paying tribute also spoke of their shock.

"So sad, such a vibrant beautiful girl taken too soon," said one friend.
