Two dead in gambling den gun battle

Gunfire erupted at a Detroit barber's shop known for gambling activity, leaving at least two men dead.

The shootings happened at about 6pm local time at Al's Barber Shop, said police spokeswoman Kelly Miner. She said nine men were shot and two of them were confirmed dead. All the victims were men.

Police chief James Craig said "suspects engaged a couple of victims" before "several shots were fired". It was not known if any of the victims fired back.

Ms Miner said people in two cars exchanged gunfire with each other, then shot into the shop.

"Somehow someone shot into the building, and that's when people rushed out of the building and were running into other area businesses for cover," she said. Both of the dead men were inside the shop.

The barber's shop is in a strip mall along a major road on the city's east side, and Mr Craig said it was a known site for illegal gambling.

"We're not sure if this was over a bad debt. We have no idea," he said. "We know it's a barber shop and gambling has occurred in this location."

Police are looking for two vehicles that the suspects may have been using, a 2004 white Chevrolet Impala that may have a broken window and bullet holes in the back, and a 2004 black Impala.

The shop is part of a business strip that includes a Chinese restaurant, car repair shops and a convenience store.
