Two die as F-16 collides with plane

An F-16 fighter jet has collided with a Cessna over South Carolina in the US, killing two people aboard the smaller plane.

The US Air Force pilot ejected safely, and is apparently uninjured, officials say.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson confirmed two people were in the Cessna. Both were killed, and the Cessna was destroyed.

Mr Knudson said there are not yet any details on what caused the collision or where the planes were travelling.

Lt Jenny Hyden, a spokeswoman for Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, said earlier in the day that the pilot had been taken to the base for observation.
