Two inmates dead in Brazil prison riot as two guards held hostage

A prison riot in Brazil's southern Parana state has left at least two inmates dead - one of whom was decapitated - and six others injured.

The prison affairs department in Parana said negotiations are under way after the riot began on Thursday afternoon at the Cascavel penitentiary.

It said the inmates are holding two guards hostage.

The G1 news portal reported that the inmates are demanding better food and the transfer of three guards to other facilities.

About 700 of the facility's 980 inmates are taking part in the uprising, which Governor Beto Richa of Parana attributed to rival prison gangs.
