UN: £257m pledged towards helping Rohingya refugees

The UN's humanitarian aid agency chief said roughly £257 million has been pledged towards more than 600,000 ethnic Rohingya who have fled Burma into Bangladesh since August.

Mark Lowcock, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told a one-day conference in Geneva for the Rohingya that donors included governments and the European Union.

The UN and its partners are seeking £328 million to help the Rohingya through until February.

Mr Lowcock said more contributions are still expected.

The UN refugee agency said 603,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled into Bangladesh since security forces in neighbouring Burma launched a violent crackdown against them on August 25.
