US and Canadian cinemas feel the force of Rogue One

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has continued to soar at US and Canadian box offices, adding 96.1 million dollars (£78.7m) in ticket sales and beating a spate of new releases to remain number one over the Christmas weekend.

The animated animal tale Sing won the battle for second place with a 54.9-million (£45m) debut. Three other new releases, Passengers, 'Why Him? and Assassin's Creed, rounded out the top five.

Ticket sales have already topped 11 billion dollars (£9bn) for the year in the US and Canada, according to comScore.
