US offers to work with Russia to set up Syria no-fly zones

The US is prepared to work with Russia to establish no-fly zones in Syria, secretary of state Rex Tillerson has said.

He said Washington is renewing an offer to co-operate with Russia in the Syrian conflict, including on military matters, ahead of President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin this week.

Mr Tillerson said the US is also open to jointly setting up a truce monitoring and humanitarian aid delivery mechanism.

His comments came as Mr Trump prepared to meet Mr Putin on Friday in Germany. He said the US-Russia co-operation would create stability in Syria as US-backed forces continue their assault on the Islamic State group.

Mr Tillerson said the group had been "badly wounded" and may be on the "brink of complete defeat," but added that Russia has to play a constructive role.
