Video: Scottish couple come face-to-face with bear on California holiday

A Scottish couple holidaying in California came face-to-face with a bear on the porch of their suburban holiday home.

CCTV footage showed Bob and Irene McKeown locking the door of the Pasedena house, unaware the large animal was watching them from just feet away.

Mr McKeown told a local television station he had not noticed the bear until he and his wife were almost at the car.

He realised the animal had been creeping up on them when he felt “something brush against his leg”.

“Once I closed the door, I turned round and I shouted: ‘It's a bear, it's a bear. No,’” he added.

The video then shows him fumbling with his keys as he frantically tries to open the front door of the house.

"I ran up the stairs, trying to get in the door and the key wouldn't turn," he said.

Mr McKeown was uninjured apart from a small cut needing a plaster.

Residents reported seeing a bear from Tuesday, when rubbish collections are due.

Film footage showed it rolling around in gardens and gnawing on a fence.

Only 12 bear attacks have been officially recorded in California since 1980.
