White House acknowledges Obama will not be able to close Guantanamo Bay

The Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba will still be open when President Barack Obama leaves office, the White House said.

The administration acknowledged publicly for the first time that Mr Obama will be unable to fulfil a core campaign promise.

Although it has long been clear he would not be able to shut the prison, the White House had continued to maintain he was working towards closing it.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it became clear Mr Obama could not fulfil the goal after the administration entered its final 30 days.

By law the president must give Congress 30 days' notice of detainee transfers.

Congress repeatedly blocked Mr Obama from closing it. Mr Earnest said politics in both parties was to blame.
