Whitey Bulger's girlfriend in court
The longtime girlfriend of reputed Boston crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger has denied helping him elude authorities during his 16 years as a fugitive.
Catherine Greig entered her not guilty plea in a brief appearance in federal court in Boston. She also waived a reading of the indictment.
She was indicted last week on a charge of conspiracy to harbour and conceal a fugitive, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of five years.
The 60-year-old Greig has been held since she and Bulger, who allegedly inspired Jack Nicholson's character Frank Costello in The Departed, were captured in June in Santa Monica, California.
Bulger, one of America's most wanted men and a reputed FBI informant, has pleaded not guilty to participating in 19 murders.
Greig's lawyer described her as a subservient woman who was in love with Bulger and unaware of the extent of his alleged crimes.
He said he plans to request bail in the future.
