Widespread sexual abuse at elite boarding school detailed in report

An athletic trainer was among people who carried out widespread sexual abuse at an elite Rhode Island boarding school, according to a report.

At least one in five girls who attended St George's in the 1970s was abused by trainer Al Gibbs, the report found.

It also found that 10 school employees sexually abused at least 51 students in the 1970s and 1980s, and at least 10 students were abused by fellow students.

Independent investigator Martin Murphy, who issued the report on Thursday, was hired by the school and the survivors' group SGS for Healing in January.

Gibbs was fired in 1980 and has since died. The school acknowledged in December that he abused 17 students.

State police previously conducted their own investigation and said they would not bring charges.
