Whether towards light or darkness, leaders lead. When a nation accepts debauched leadership, as is happening in Britain now, the scandal ends not at the door of the leader, but of the system which has allowed him to debase his office.

With Boris Johnson, no one can be truly surprised that a good-times prime minister presided over Downing Street being converted into a part-time nightclub. Admittedly, even for Johnson the fact that he allowed illegal carousing in the heart of government during a pandemic is jarring for those who hold him in anything but the lowest esteem. But no one can be surprised that when this was exposed he instinctively resorted to dishonesty.
