The government's policy on the Protocol could have dire consequences

If this was a government whose word was its bond, what Liz Truss set out in Parliament today would be dramatic. It would represent the UK deciding to ditch swathes of the Northern Ireland Protocol regardless of the EU’s views. The reality may be very different.

The foreign secretary’s statement on the future of the protocol was meant to finally bring clarity on the future of the Irish Sea border and the UK’s relationship with the EU. Instead, it has added to the suspicions on all sides that the Government’s proposed legislation to disapply swathes of the protocol is merely a negotiating tactic — not just with the EU, but between the Conservative Party’s competing factions.
