Religion should be offside in football

What a pity it is that even our national football teams are besmirched by religious divisions.

It is well-known that young northern Catholic players with nationalist sympathies are encouraged to join the Republic camp, rather than stay with the Northern Ireland squad.

Football chiefs claim that the players are given a free choice, but in what other part of the world would religion play such a role?

Talk about scoring own-goals - we are experts at that.
