Seeing the Doctor is always a good idea

This week's TV Bafta nominations are a welcome reminder of the quality of television in 2011, despite repeated whining about dumbing down.

How does one choose between the compelling Benedict Cumberbatch in the joyfully innovative Sherlock and the delicious Matt Smith in the ever-wondrous Doctor Who?

I hope the astonishing Vicky McClure is recognised for her hair-raising performance in Shane Meadow's haunting This is England, and Steve Coogan must win a gong for the brilliant The Trip, but it will hurt to see my lovely little Tom Hollander's spin in Rev go unrewarded.

Then there's Being Human! And Mad Men versus The Killing - where do you start? (With Don Draper obviously, but still, it's tough...)

Also including The X Factor and the Cube, the list confirms there will always be rubbish on TV, but there will also always be great minds rising above it. As a great British TV institution might say, dumbing down my a**e.
