New framework will deliver welcome boost to Belfast’s Shaftsbury Square area: Nelson McCausland

Nelson McCausland has announced that GM Design Associates Limited have been appointed to start work on a Development Framework for Shaftesbury Square.

The framework will set out a shared vision of the area’s physical development potential that can be used by statutory bodies and private developers over the next decade, to inform their regeneration and development priorities.

Announcing the plans, the Minister said: “Shaftesbury Square is a key economic artery within South Belfast. Upon completion, this work will help refresh the area’s reputation and boost its economic potential over the next decade. Today I can confirm that work has now commenced on a Development Framework for the area.

“Over the course of the next six months GM Design Associates Limited will work with a wide range of stakeholders to produce a framework. This will provide the area with an integrated plan that identifies critical factors and stages to guide and propel planned regeneration across the Shaftesbury Square area.”

The framework will incorporate complementary proposals for current and emerging opportunity sites and significant ‘nodes’ within the target area that can act as catalysts for private sector investment. It will have an appropriate focus on a mix of uses, improving access and movement, key interventions and improving the public realm.
