Cheryl’s bitten by genuine reality bug

By Gail Walker

Spare a thought for Cheryl Cole as she continues to battle malaria.

If new reports are to be believed, the Girls Aloud singer has contracted one of the most deadly forms of the disease and was just hours from death.

Apparently, she is still on oxygen and a drip, and it will be months before she recovers.

(Of course, if the red tops are to believed, her soon-to-be ex-husband Ashley Cole is living up to his reputation as the nation's No 1 pantomine cad and has not even been in touch.)

The freakishness of Cheryl's illness (being bitten by a mosquito on holiday, for goodness sake) serves as a reminder of the sheer randomness of life: one minute you're on top of the world and then a stupid mozzy brings everything to a crashing stop.

True, it may not be at the hands of an insect and tropical disease, but it does make you think how there but for the grace of God ... a moment's inattention crossing the road, ignoring the pins and needles in your arm or simply turning the wrong corner at the wrong time.

To quote the song: ‘Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.'

Get well soon, Cheryl.
