Grand Budapest Hotel trailer deserves an Oscar

By Jane Graham

How long before they start giving out Oscars for Best Trailer? Making a great two minute trailer from 120 minutes of footage is a technical and creative art which requires a mastering of editing, emotional manipulation and, depending on your approach, capsule storytelling or abstract mood-alteration.

In an age of flabby overlong movies with boring overwrought third acts, it's common for the thrilling, heart-pumping trailer to outperform the film its presenting.

Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel is probably a wonderful, witty, thing of beauty anyway – most of his films are – but if you want to see one of the best short films of 2013, check out the trailer. Sublime.
