A little dry wit helps to keep up the spirits

By Lindy McDowell

I spotted a sign outside a bar the other day. 'For Dry January we are serving the following: Dry Gin, Dry White Wine, Dry Martini and Dry Roasted Peanuts.'

I do like a bit of dry wit.

The health nannies would doubtless sniff that this isn't exactly, shall we say, in the spirit of the abstinence initiative.

But if ever there was a month that required a stiff drink - dry or very, very wet - it's certainly January. Maybe 'Fewer in February' would stand a better chance of success.
