Kylie Minogue is a genuine superstar

By Lindy McDowell

In a poignant television interview Kylie Minogue breaks down while speaking movingly about meeting the parents of a child suffering from cancer.

She describes becoming emotional when they had asked about how she was coping in her own battle with the disease.

It's a rare insight into the very real distress that the singer would have experienced at the time.

Not that you'd have known it.

Kylie was a tower of strength when it came to soldiering on, keeping the details of her cancer fight to herself and showing the world a brave, often smiling face.

"You might have seen the bravery but I don't think the public saw, well, I stayed indoors and it was my family who supported me through the really rotten, dark moments," she says.

As a celebrity she would have been very aware her example would impact on other sufferers.

She has been, without doubt, an inspiration there.

And there's no room for self-pity even now when she talks about whether or not she'll ever have a child - an aspect of her illness that understandably would be of major importance to any young woman.

"There's more than one way to skin a cat," she says stoically.

The old cat-skinning alternative option is actually a good rule for life in general.

When you've been through what Kylie and so many other women have, it surely puts everything else in perspective.
