Lindy McDowell: Expert advice would give you an art attack
Fake or fortune? I watched the weekend television show where Fiona Bruce and another art expert set out to prove whether or not a painting was by a master. Or a close effort.
In the most recent episode, the question was whether or not a disputed art work was by Sir William Nicholson. I thought the team did a good job of proving it was entirely legit. However, the Nicholson expert said nay.
So, a painting bought for £165,000 was therefore devalued to around £200. And this entirely on the judgment of just one expert. I can't think of any other area where the word of one person holds such sway.
That's an art in itself.
