Nelson Mandela didn't get due honour
In all the years that he commanded global headlines, Nelson Mandela was generally referred to as ... Nelson Mandela. In the aftermath of his death he is suddenly, universally, Madiba.
Is this because commentators feel use of his clan name makes them sound so much more... well... close to the great man?
The response to Mandela's passing has been part dignified (mostly on the part of the South African people) and part cloying (celebs, politicians etc). Where too many memorial/funeral service attendees were concerned, it seemed to be more about them, less about him. Yes, there were a number of deeply moving moments in the send-off for the legendary Mandela.
But, honestly, the man deserved better.
