No peace and love for papal doves
White doves of peace being released into the air is one of those fluffy images much beloved by men of the cloth and women in wedding gowns.
But it can all go horribly, horribly wrong as witnessed this week when The Pope released a cooing pair which were subsequently set upon by birds of prey, to wit, in this instance, a seagull and a crow.
They set about the hapless doves to the horror of watching crowds. Apparently this is not an unusual occurrence. Doves released as part of wedding ceremonies have similarly come to grief after attack by bigger, nastier birds. Suddenly the symbolism of doves of peace takes on a whole new poignancy. Doves in pieces.
