Irony, fascism, pot, kettle, black ...
The SDLP and Sinn Fein condemn the Orange Order for threatening to discipline Tom Elliott for attending a Catholic funeral mass.
The Order is sectarian and intolerant, they say. It should be tolerant and respect people's differences. Tom Elliott should be allowed to do what he thinks is right, to show respect to the dead.
The SDLP and Sinn Fein oppose a march past the City Hall by Army regiments returned from Afghanistan.
A march designed to let people show respect to the dead.
I've just looked the word ‘irony’ up in the dictionary. It's not a million miles away from the word ‘fascism’ either.
Perhaps both those words are missing from the lexicons of our politicians.
Something's certainly missing when our leaders continue to browbeat ‘the other side’ for the very intransigence they demonstrate themselves.
By the way, the dictionary in question also has among its lexicon the words, ‘pot’, ‘kettle’ and ‘black’.
