Minister pays tribute to Father Kennedy

The Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín has paid tribute to Father Kennedy who died today.

Father Kennedy was the Chair of the Lough Neagh Co-operative Society, in Toomebridge.

The Minister said “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Father Kennedy and wish to extend my deepest sympathy to Father Kennedy’s extended family and friends.

“Father Kennedy was a remarkable and visionary leader demonstrating a practical sense of community empowerment and public service. He helped lead a successful battle to assert the basic rights of Lough Neagh’s indigenous fishing families.

“He was instrumental in setting up the Lough Neagh Co-operative and under his leadership over the past 45 years he transformed the management of the eel industry on the Lough into the largest and most successful commercial eel fishery businesses in Europe.

"The fishermen and wider community of the Lough owe Father Kennedy a great debt of gratitude. The success of the Co-operative and the contribution it makes to the local economy are a fitting legacy to Father Kennedy’s work.”
