Minister visits sport and art venues in the Newry Area

Stormont press release - Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure

Minister Carál Ní Chuilín was in Newry today where she met with local sports and arts organisations.

The Minister said: “I am here to listen, to see the work taking place in communities and to hear about how these organisations plan to develop.

“Culture, arts and leisure has a key role to play at a grassroots level right across the north. These clubs and bodies may represent different sports, but there is a lot of common ground. And all have a positive effect on people’s lives.

“Taking part in sport and physical recreation has benefits in terms of health and well being. This is true for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

“Today, I have seen this first hand. I have also been able to acknowledge the work that goes on addressing my department’s priorities in tackling poverty and social exclusion and promoting equality through sport. This is particular true in rural areas.”

Notes to editors:

1. The Minister met representatives from a range of GAA and boxing clubs including Crossmaglen Rangers, Dromintee GAC, Thomas Davis GAC, Bosco Boxing Club and Sacred Heart Boxing Club.
