Sports Minister applauds swimmers at World Championships

Stormont press release - Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has congratulated local swimmers taking part in the IPC World Championships in Montreal.

The minister said: “Almost one year on from the Paralympic Games, it is fantastic to once again see local athletes competing and succeeding at the very highest level.”

Bethany Firth, from Seaford, has secured silver medals in the S14 100 metres backstroke and 200m freestyle. Laurence McGivern, from Rostrevor, is due to take part in the men’s backstroke over the weekend.

The Minister added: “Bethany and Laurence are remarkable athletes who continue to be an inspiration for us all. But their success is hard-earned. It is built on training, discipline and dedication, not to mention the support of coaches, friends and family.”

The IPC Championships see over 650 of the world’s best swimmers from more than 60 countries taking part, including many Paralympic Games medallists.
