Sports Minister congratulates track and field medal winners

Stormont press release - Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure

Sports Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín, has congratulated today’s medal winners at the World Police and Fire Games.

The Minister was at the Mary Peters Track to present medals at the track and field events. Over 40 countries were competing today in a range of events from the 4x100m relay to the shot-put.

Minister Ní Chuilín said: “This is the sixth day of the Games and as well as track and field events I have also watched Ice Hockey, Cricket, 5 a side Soccer and Gaelic Football. At each event I attend, I can see the spirit of competitiveness and camaraderie that these Games are famous for.

“With 56 sports events taking place at 42 venues all across the north, from the East Strand in Portrush to the Mourne Mountains, there is something for everyone to choose from. The Games have been very exciting to watch and the athletes have attained some fast times on the track. On Saturday, Los Angeles firefighter Brent Gray won the 100m final with the fastest time of the day with 10.88 seconds.

“I was honoured today to present the medals for the long jump and the hurdles. I hope that these Games will inspire many to take up new sports and new challenges to help to develop sport at grassroots level.”

Earlier today, the Minister attended a cricket match at the Pavilion in Stormont to watch the Sri Lanka Customs Lions play the NYPD.

The Minister said: “After the rain held up play last Thursday, it was good to see some cricket at Stormont today. This is a sport enjoying a surge in popularity in this part of the world thanks to Ireland’s performances on the international stage. Cricket is making its debut as a WPFG event this year and, as local teams face opposition from across the globe, I am pleased to see the competitors in action.”
