Sports Minister enjoys World Police and Fire Games
Stormont Executive press release - DEPARTMENT OF CULTURE, ARTS AND LEISURE
Sports Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín, has visited the World Police and Fire Games track and field events.
The track and field events were held at the Mary Peters track in Belfast.
Minister Ní Chuilín said: “The Mary Peters track is a superb facility and Mary has been a great ambassador for the Games so far and I would like to personally thank her for her dedication to date.
“2013 is shaping up to be a great year for Ireland, during which the north can raise its profile and further enhance our reputation as a destination for international sporting and cultural events.
“On this, the second day on the Games, I am looking forward to witnessing, in particular, the 100m sprint, let’s see if any records can be broken.
“The men and women who are taking part in these events have shown real determination and motivation to get here and have come from as far away as Australia and China.
“The Games are a wonderful opportunity to highlight the potential of the north, its people and its talent.”
Later this evening, the Minister will attend the Faithless concert at Féile 25.
The Minister said: “It was a tremendous achievement for Féile to get Faithless as of one of their headline acts this year. For a quarter of a century, the festival has been at the centre of the community and despite growing into a prestigious international event, Kevin Gamble and his excellent team have managed to retain their connection and the link with the local community. This is something to be celebrated and take pride in, and I am delighted that my Department has been able to sponsor Féile as part of the DCAL Summer Cultural Programme to complement the World Police and Fire Games. The additional events will ensure both locals and visitors for the World Police and Fire Games will have an opportunity to join in the fun, and experience the friendly Belfast welcome.”
