Statement from the Department for Employment and Learning

Stormont Executive press release - Department for Employment and Learning

A bogus company posing as a legitimate employer recently posted a vacancy on the Department for Employment and Learning’s website, JobCentre Online.

A number of clients responded to this fictitious vacancy. The Department understands that a number of applicants were subsequently asked to pay for criminal record checks which the bogus company claimed were provided at a discounted rate agreed with Access NI. The vacancy has been closed and the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Trading Standards Services and the Information Commissioner’s Office have been notified.

A Department for Employment and Learning spokesperson said: “I would like to apologise to the individuals concerned for any distress that this bogus company may have caused. The Department has contacted all individuals who responded to the bogus company and a helpline has been set up for clients should they wish to get in contact with the Department. The helpline telephone number is 028 9025 2007 and is open during office hours (9am to 5pm on weekdays). The Department has also launched an investigation into the incident."
