In the midst of great personal challenges and trauma, the human spirit can be immensely inspiring.

This sums up the story of 16-year-old Alexandra Johnston, who died last Thursday after a five-year struggle with a rare form of cancer.

When diagnosed at the age of 11 she was given only three months to live, but she battled on and inspired everyone around her. On her 16th birthday she received more than 1,000 cards from around the world.

Now and again an individual like Alexandra comes along to remind us what 'inspirational' really means. Her bravery in the face of a cruel diagnosis, from the age of only 11, is an example to us all.
