Age is no barrier

Editor's Viewpoint

For those who maintain that age is just a number and not an encumbrance, then Tom Lackey is living proof. For he has just completed a record-making aeroplane wing walk across the Irish Sea. At 93 years of age he is the oldest person ever to complete the challenge. And it's all in the name of charity as he has raised around £1m for good causes with his exploits.

He does it in memory of his late wife of 56 years, Isabel, who died 10 years ago, and carries a photo of her in his pocket during his flights. No doubt the memory helps keep him warm when he is 1,200ft up in the chilly air. So the next time you are put off from going on a walk because the weather is too cold, think of Tom and stop being a wimp.
