All-island health initiative leading way for treatment
A conference held in Belfast over the next two days will highlight the work of a unique all-Ireland health initiative.
The all-island congenital heart disease network was established in 2015 after a survey found that surgery for babies and young people born with heart defects was not sustainable in Belfast.
Very ill children can now have operations performed in Dublin instead of travelling to England. Financial input from Stormont and Dublin, collaboration between clinicians, managers, patient bodies and support groups in both cities have created a model for delivery of complex treatment that could be replicated for other specialisms.
