An abiding memory
Everyone who knew Alex Higgins, who was buried yesterday, had a story about him, whether about his snooker genius or his mercurial temperament.
But for one little girl, he was just a favourite uncle. To six-year-old Alex Mitchell, all his world-beating performances on the green baize, or his hell-raising exploits, mean nothing.
To her, the real memory of Higgins was him in tears as he listened to her sing Over The Rainbow a couple of weeks before his death.
That will be an occasion she will treasure in years to come. We remember a legend; she just wonders why Alex is not around any more to listen to her sing.
