Another link to past gone with death of Evelyn Olivier

Editor's Viewpoint

The death of Evelyn Elizabeth Olivier, the last surviving child of former NI Parliament Speaker Sir Norman Stronge, cuts another link with the ascendancy which once held such sway in the province.

Her life - educated at an exclusive English school, joining the Wrens during the Second World War and marrying a senior Army officer - practically followed the template for families of that class.

But fate holds no respect for anyone and the murder of her father and brother James by the IRA in 1981 and the burning to the ground of their ancestral home Tynan Abbey in Co Armagh was a cowardly and indefensible crime and a heavy burden to bear.
