Armagh apples bearing fruit with protected status
Of course the people of Armagh always knew their apples were special, but now that has been confirmed by the European Union which has given the Armagh Bramley Apple Protected Geographical Indication status.
The Armagh Bramley has a distinctive taste, and with some 200 growers in the county, it is a key ingredient in many products from pies to cider.
And it is estimated that the humble fruit is worth several million pounds to the local economy. Now that really is something to chew on. So if you are in Armagh tomorrow, take in a festival dedicated to the apple along with Lough Neagh eels and Comber potatoes, all products which are now guaranteed a glowing global reputation.
