At time of great celebration tragedy of death still lingers

The death of a loved one at any time of the year is heartbreaking, but there is a special poignancy when it occurs around Christmas time, a time of joy and, in the Christian church, of the birth of hope and redemption.

But Pat Loughrey, whose daughter died on December 22 last year, speaks for many when he tells of the bleakness he feels as the anniversary approaches.

Christmas is a time for families for most people, but an empty chair around the table is a reminder that life will never be the same again. It can seem that there is never any point in another celebration, but as Pat discovered, remembering the good times can be a balm for a broken heart.
