Authorities found wanting in reaction to London blaze

Editor's Viewpoint

The response by central and local government to the Grenfell Tower disaster has been slow, lacking in empathy for the plight of the survivors, and giving the perception that avoiding culpability for the tragedy is their greatest concern.

It sits badly alongside the tremendous response from the public and voluntary and community groups through their massive donations of money, food and clothing, and the efforts of volunteers to make sure they get to those in most need as quickly as possible.

Central government and the local authority need to harness and replicate that response by putting an official structure on the relief effort - and quickly.
