Ban removal a victory for Press freedom and ratepayers

Editor's Viewpoint

Coleraine Borough Council has seen common sense and scrapped its controversial ban on the public and the media at certain key meetings.

Members said the ban had damaged public perception of the council.

What else did they expect if they were keeping the ratepayers in the dark over what was being discussed at committee meetings?

The reversal of the ban is welcome and a victory for Press freedom as the media had been in the vanguard of opposition.

Ratepayers fund the councils and are entitled to be kept aware of what goes on behind town hall doors. The decisions taken will affect their daily lives and also the bills they are presented with annually.

Ultimately, it is good that Coleraine's councillors now recognise that they are servants of the public and treat the ratepayers with respect.
