BBC vote will not tarnish magnificent year for our Rory McIlroy
We may be biased on this side of the Irish Sea, but Rory McIlroy certainly had outstanding claims to become the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. Winning two Majors, being part of the victorious Ryder Cup team and being the number one golfer in the world made it a memorable year for the young Northern Ireland man.
And unlike Formula One, where the competitiveness of the car is a major factor, Rory's triumphs are entirely due to his talent. He probably was disappointed not to top the poll, but then the public is not always the best arbiter of excellence. Maybe he will be fired up to be even better next year.
