'Best friend' an inadequate tribute to canine heroes

Editor's Viewpoint

Dogs are not only man's best friend, but friends who keep on giving. Our story today on the rescue dogs trained in Northern Ireland shows how they are used in a variety of life-saving situations. They have been deployed in earthquake regions to find people buried in the rubble and have helped ensure that they are brought out alive.

One of the most disturbing tasks was finding the bodies of those killed in the Lockerbie aircraft bombing. They also help find people stranded on mountains or who have gone missing, perhaps contemplating taking their own lives. Man's best friend somehow seems an inadequate tribute to these canine heroes.
