Brazil taught an ugly lesson in the Beautiful Game
It was one of the most astonishing World Cup results of all-time. Brazil, a name synonymous with the beautiful game, was humbled 7-1 by Germany.
We in Northern Ireland know how cruel football can be and have suffered many on-field disasters, but seldom can any top-flight nation have succumbed so feebly. The players and manager face a torrid time from the fans, but it was the supporters that most people felt sorry for.
Many were in tears.
Brazil is not a country used to being beaten, never mind to this degree.
The team was expected to make the final – indeed the fans demanded that they did so – but now the players will have to lick their wounds and the Brazilian FA will have to see what lessons can be learned.
Just being Brazil doesn't guarantee success.
