Charity begins at home for our big-hearted footballers

Editor's Viewpoint

Northern Ireland’s international footballers are stars with the common touch. They may be living every young boy’s dream on the field but off it they show a generosity of spirit that endears them even more to their fervent supporters. The gesture of all 23 players in the squad that played in the Euros to donate their match fees to a cancer charity’s respite home for children suffering from the disease has significantly boosted the home's finances.

We often complain that many sports stars are poor role models for other young people, but that is one charge we can never level at our footballers.

They are true stars on and off the field.
