City mural fitting and timely tribute to shirt factory girls
It is cause for celebration that the women and girls who were the backbone of Londonderry shirt factories have been given their rightful place in the city's history.
Artist Joe Campbell's tribute mural Factory Girls was unveiled yesterday in Derry's Craft Village, and it vividly pays tribute to the thousands who toiled so hard in the city's dozens of shirt and garment factories over the years. Civic recognition has been slow in coming, and a proposed tribute by Derry and Strabane Council and the former Department for Social Development has not materialised after 12 long years.
The new mural will at last bring recognition and will provide another tangible reminder of Derry's remarkable social and economic history.
