Deserved award for Lourdes pilgrimage stalwart Paddy

Editor's Viewpoint

Paddy McGowan is a remarkable man with a remarkable faith, bringing 7,000 pilgrims to Lourdes over four decades, a feat that has deservedly won him official recognition from the town's civic authorities, who have presented him with a medallion usually reserved for ambassadors.

The Marian shrine at Lourdes is credited with many miracles, but it is nothing short of a miracle how much Mr McGowan has packed into his 80 years - serving in the NI Fire and Rescue Service, being a bus driver, a councillor for 30 years, a Justice of the Peace, and Sheriff of Omagh, as well as running pilgrimages. What an inspiration.
