Editor's Viewpoint: A courageous end

Those who engaged in violence on the streets of Belfast as a sign of patriotism to the Union flag, should look at how a real hero behaves in defence of liberty and justice.

Former RUC officer Ken McGonigle was shot dead during a firefight with insurgents in Afghanistan as he courageously helped save the lives of several colleagues.

Carrying only a pistol he took on the insurgents who were armed with rockets and gave his life for others. Deservedly he was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. His widow and children quite rightly are proud of this man of courage.
