Editor's Viewpoint: A family's torment

Who can tell what is really going through the minds of Andy and Patricia Cardy as they listen to the evidence against the man accused of killing their beloved nine-year-old daughter, Jennifer, 30 years ago.

What we can tell is that they have behaved with great dignity. But then it all got too much for Patricia who broke down in tears as the court heard taped interviews with the accused, serial child killer, Robert Black, in which he told police he fantasised about abducting a young girl and sexually abusing her. No parent should have to listen to such sickening stories and our thoughts are with the Cardy family as they hope at last to find some closure to their enduring nightmare.
