Editor's Viewpoint: A fond farewell

The retirement yesterday of the Dean of Belfast Dr Houston McKelvey was an important landmark in the life of Belfast and its Church of Ireland Cathedral.

During the past decade, the Dean has kept St Anne's at the heart of the community. He has worked closely with St Peter's Roman Catholic Cathedral in reaching across the ecclesiastic divides. Dean McKelvey was perhaps best-known as the 'Black Santa' who, along with his colleagues, collected millions at the annual Christmas sit-out for charities. In this important mission he helped to show that Ulster people are always generous to others in need. In this he maintained a tradition for others to follow.
