Editor's Viewpoint: A miracle for McIlroy, now that would be some story!

First, the good news - The Open at Royal Portrush has made a great start. The bad news is that Rory McIlroy has had a disastrous first day.

He has left himself with a mountain to climb in today's second round if he is to avoid the dreaded cut.

A triple bogey on the 18th yesterday gave him an eight-over-par first round of 79, but sadly the damage was already done when he dropped a calamitous four shots on the par-four, 416-yard first hole.

Yet Rory has held the course record of 61 at Royal Portrush for 14 years, shot when he was only 16.

Sport thrives on miracles, and Rory needs a miracle. Can he recover today to remain in contention? What a story that would be.
