Editor's Viewpoint: A weighty problem
Research has shown that a worrying number of children in Northern Ireland are overweight at the age of five.
That is the highest figure in the UK and factors being put forward to explain the findings include starting babies on solid food at too early an age and also lack of exercise. Low household income and lack of education are other factors which contribute to obesity among the young, according to the researchers.
We already know that Northern Ireland is the poorest region of the UK and while some of our education standards are the highest, a large percentage of people leave school with no or few qualifications. Educating parents on how to look after their children properly is obviously one subject which needs revision.
